Petra Justine Corneliussen has seen a lot of chained and neglected dogs over the years but Destino stood out as one of the worst she had ever seen. The dog was chained to a stone hut in a rural town in the mountains. He was emaciated and his ears were bloodied. She suspected Destino was being fed only enough to stay alive and decided she would do everything in her power to save him.
Petra, who is Norwegian, currently lives in Cape Verde, Africa. She approached Destino’s owner and asked for permission to take him to safety, telling the man she wanted to adopt Destino because she had fallen in love with him. The owner right away said “no.” But when she broke down in tears, the owner relented and said she could take him.
A few days later Petra and her partner, Marlon, picked Destino up and began their long journey back to their home in Sal.
Petra could tell that Destino was suffering trauma and had been abused, but he is still so loving. Every morning, he comes and greets her wagging his tail. As Destino has healed, his true personality has begun to shine. He is a calm dog and very good with people. “He’s really happy now,” Petra says.
Now, all Destino needs is a family who will love him and keep him safe.
Petra writes on her TikTok channel, “He’s ready to fly! He just needs someone to come forward to foster him (in Europe) or give him the forever home he always dreamed of and that he so, so deserves after everything he has been through.”
