Animal Control Officer Finds Stray Dog Sitting In Child’s Car Seat Trying To Stay Warm

When animal control officers responded to reports of an aggressive pit bull barking at a door during a winter storm in San Antonio, Texas, they expected to find a dangerous dog.

Instead, they found Martha.

Curled up in a discarded child car seat surrounded by trash, the frightened dog was trying to stay warm as freezing temperatures swept through the city. She was painfully thin, with her ribs showing, and appeared to have been surviving on the streets for quite some time.

“I was expecting a big, scary dog based [on] what the caller indicated,” Corporal Perry told The Dodo. “Instead, I found a scared little girl that was just trying to stay warm in an abandoned car seat surrounded by trash.”

At first, Martha wasn’t sure whether she could trust the officer who approached her. But after a moment of hesitation, she climbed into a waiting truck with a warm blanket inside, wagging her tail as if she knew she was finally safe.

At the shelter, Martha eagerly devoured her food and immediately became attached to a stuffed bear she picked out from a box of toys. Staff later learned she was underweight, heartworm positive, and had likely had litters of puppies in the past.

Wanting to give her the best chance at finding a family, the shelter placed Martha in a foster home. There, she quickly revealed her sweet personality. She slept on her foster family’s bed, followed them everywhere they went, and gathered up all the toys she could find but always kept her beloved stuffed bear close by.

As Martha received treatment and began gaining weight, she learned what it meant to be loved and cared for. The scared dog who once sought shelter in a discarded car seat discovered the warmth of a real home.

And the best part? Martha’s happy ending became permanent. She found a family of her very own.
