A Deaf Dog Was a Day Away From Euthanasia—Now He Loves ‘Flying’ Across the Couches
He was supposed to be euthanized that very night. Instead, a phone call changed everything for the deaf pit bull.
Dharma had volunteered with Satchi at the shelter for eight months and had come to know the sweet deaf dog well. Then one day, a fellow volunteer delivered heartbreaking news. Satchi had only a few hours left.
The moment she heard, Dharma rushed to the shelter. She wasn’t about to let him die alone. That decision changed both of their lives.
Within just a day of arriving at his new home, Satchi did something his new mom would never forget. He fell asleep with the biggest smile on his face. It was as if he finally knew he was safe.
Soon, Satchi revealed another side of himself—one full of joy. His favorite activity is what Dharma calls “flying.” With a happy grin on his face, Satchi takes running leaps from couch to couch, launching himself high into the air as if making up for lost time.
And he didn’t have to adjust to his new life alone. Dharma already had another deaf dog named Nali, and the two became instant best friends. “When a deaf dog feels safe, they will relax around you,” Dharma says.
She doesn’t see much difference in having a deaf dog, noting that they do all the same things as non impaired dogs.
Satchi may not be able to hear the world around him. But now, surrounded by love, friendship, and a family of his own, he finally has something even better – a life worth leaping for.
