Service Dog Gets Special ‘Diploma’ Alongside Her Human At College Graduation

A heartwarming graduation moment at Texas Tech University is capturing hearts online after a service dog received her very own “dogploma” while accompanying her owner across the stage.

Graduate Makaela Muse was walking at the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas, to receive her degree when an unexpected surprise stole the show. As Muse shook hands with Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec, he suddenly turned and reached behind a row of greenery. Moments later, he revealed a rawhide bone tied with a red ribbon and presented it to Sadie, Muse’s devoted service dog.

The audience immediately erupted into cheers and applause as Sadie calmly accepted her special graduation treat and walked proudly offstage beside Muse. The touching moment was shared on Instagram by Texas Tech University and quickly went viral, with viewers celebrating the university’s thoughtful recognition of the loyal German shepherd’s role in Muse’s academic journey.

For Muse, the gesture meant far more than a lighthearted graduation surprise. “I was just speechless,” she later said in an interview with the university. “That just made the moment so much more special … I will never forget that.”

Behind the viral moment is a deeply personal story of perseverance, resilience, and the extraordinary bond between a woman and her service dog.

According to Texas Tech, Muse had been experiencing unexplained medical symptoms throughout high school but endured several misdiagnoses before doctors finally discovered she had rare genetic conditions requiring constant monitoring and treatment.

She arrived at Texas Tech determined to pursue her dream of attending veterinary school, but everything changed during her freshman year.

“I passed out in my anatomy lab,” Muse recalled. “Coincidentally, we were talking about homework instead of actual anatomy, and long story short, I had some rather rare genetic conditions that required constant monitoring and several treatments to help maintain and get under control.”

After the incident, Muse traveled to Dallas for specialized treatment. Soon afterward, Sadie — already a beloved member of the family — began training in Oklahoma to become a medical service dog capable of assisting with Muse’s condition.

“Not too long after that, she started going with me everywhere, because I wasn’t allowed to be alone anymore,” Muse explained.

From that point forward, Sadie became a constant companion throughout Muse’s college experience. She attended every class, stayed beside her during long nights of studying, and even wore her own protective equipment during chemistry labs. By graduation day, Sadie had become such an important part of campus life that seeing her in commencement robes felt perfectly natural.

For Muse, Sadie is far more than a service dog. She was a source of stability, safety, and unconditional support through some of the most difficult years of her life. And thanks to one unforgettable graduation moment, the world now knows Sadie deserved a diploma celebration of her own.
