Dog Who Survived Fiery Crash That Killed Her Owner Makes Emotional Journey Home
Hennessy survived a crash that took her best friend. On June 23, 63-year-old Iowa truck driver Jeffrey Simmons was traveling west on I-64 near South Charleston, West Virginia, with his faithful dog, Hennessy, riding beside him. But their tractor-trailer was involved in a crash that left the cab hanging off the edge of a bridge as smoke and flames poured from the front of the truck.

Jeffrey did not survive. But somehow, Hennessy did.
Firefighters rescued the frightened dog from the wreckage, and remarkably, she was found without serious injuries. She was taken to the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association (KCHA), where staff immediately began trying to discover who she was and how to get her back to the people who loved her.
Using the information on Hennessy’s collar, the shelter traced her to an Iowa area code and reached out for help. The community quickly rallied, discovering an old post from 2019 that revealed Hennessy was adopted from an animal shelter in Iowa, the Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown. With help from them, Jeffrey’s family was located within hours.
The next morning brought a moment of light in an otherwise heartbreaking story.
Shelter staff arranged a FaceTime call with Jeffrey’s stepson, Jason—someone Hennessy knew well. As soon as she heard his voice, Hennessy perked up and tried to give him kisses through the phone. The shelter said seeing and hearing familiar faces seemed to lift her spirits tremendously.
Soon after, Hennessy made the journey back to Iowa, where she was reunited with Jeffrey’s family. When she saw them, she lit up, ran straight to them, and showered them with kisses.
“Hennessy completely changed – she’s excited, bubbly, full of joy,” KCHA wrote. “Dogs are so resilient. They can find happiness as long as they have the right people with them. Though a tragedy happened, we’re grateful she loves her family – and they love her back so much!
Hennessy’s story is one of heartbreaking loss, but also extraordinary compassion. In the midst of tragedy, firefighters, shelter staff, rescuers, and countless strangers came together to make sure one grieving dog didn’t lose her family too.
