Mountain Lion Pounces On Giant Schnauzer During Routine Bedtime Potty Break

A routine bedtime trip into the backyard turned into a fight for survival in a matter of seconds.

It was just after 9 p.m. when Holly Jolly, a 93-pound Giant Schnauzer, was let outside one last time before bed at her family’s home in La Verne, California.

She sniffed around the yard as she always did. Then, out of the darkness, a mountain lion exploded from the shadows.

A home security camera captured the terrifying moment the cougar lunged, clamping his jaws onto the 3-year-old dog and pinning her to the ground. Holly’s desperate cries shattered the quiet night.

Inside the house, her family heard the screams and rushed outside.

Yelling at the mountain lion and using a pool pole, they confronted the powerful predator head-on. Their desperate efforts worked. Startled by the commotion, the cougar released Holly, giving the injured dog just enough time to break free and sprint back into the safety of her home.

But the nightmare wasn’t over.

Holly was rushed for emergency veterinary care, where doctors treated numerous deep puncture wounds. She underwent surgery and required many stitches, but against the odds, she survived the brutal attack.

Then came another chilling discovery. About 20 minutes later, the family’s security camera captured the mountain lion returning to the backyard.

The predator wandered through the yard, sniffing the ground before stopping at Holly’s collar, which had been torn off during the struggle. Presumably searching for the prey that had escaped, the cougar found only the abandoned collar before disappearing back into the night.

Holly is now recovering from her injuries, but the encounter forever changed the way her family looks at their own backyard.

“We’re careful, but I think we were always concerned about coyotes and other animals,” family member Leslie Simone said. “But a mountain lion is a new beast for us, literally.”

It’s a reminder that even a familiar backyard can become dangerous in an instant—and that Holly is alive today because her family didn’t hesitate to come to her rescue.
