Man Sees A Tiny Dot on Cliffside, Right Away Knows it is a Dog in Trouble

“It was a relatively routine Wednesday afternoon when our Animal Law Enforcement (ALE) team received a call about a dog stuck on a cliff overlooking Fountain Creek,” Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) wrote on Facebook.

They had received a call from a man who was just enjoying a coffee outside of his motorcycle shop. Looking out onto the horizon he spotted a dot on a cliffside. He immediately called the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) and two officers came over to his shop.

“Officers Barker and Johnson arrived and were able to see a dog through their binoculars,” HSPPR wrote. “The dog was stuck on a small ledge about 50 yards above the creek.”

“He was funny because I couldn’t see her without my binoculars, and he said he knew the ‘dot’ was an animal because he’s never seen that dot there before,” Officer Kailie Barker told The Dodo of the Good Samaritan’s “eagle eyes.”

It took around two and a half hours for the officers to pinpoint exactly where the dog was on the cliff.

“The officers were able to locate an area right above where the dog was stuck, and a man living nearby supplied the officers with a mountaineering harness and rappelling rope,” explained HSPPR.

“Officer Barker anchored herself to a sturdy wooden fencepost and began rappelling down to the dog. Once the dog saw Officer Barker, she immediately started to wag her tail and crawl towards her, but the ground was slipping out from underneath the dog.”

The dog was too far away to reach, Officer Johnson lowered a catchpole which Officer Barker was able to get around the dog’s neck and shoulder to secure her. HSPPR wrote, “This allowed Officer Barker to slowly pull the dog closer without the risking of losing her if she fell.”

“Once the pup was finally in the arms of Officer Barker, Officer Johnson lowered a secondary rope which was securely tied into a makeshift harness for the dog. Officer Johnson quickly pulled up the dog and Officer Barker shortly after. Once both Officer Barker and the dog were off the cliff, they found out the dog’s name was ‘Jessie Lee’ from her microchip and name tag.”

Once they had Jessie Lee back at their shelter, they were able to find her family’s contact information. They gave them a call to tell them the good news, but before they could even tell them, “Jessie Lee’s owner was asking if we found their beloved pup.”

It turns out Jessie Lee had been missing for two weeks and her family had been out looking for her every day. “When we told them she was ready to come home, they were there first thing the next morning to pick up their Jessie Lee,” HSPPR wrote.

Thank goodness Jessie Lee survived her harrowing ordeal and got back home to safety!
