Dog Found in Irrigation Canal Covered in Maggots Survives Against the Odds

A dog who fell into an irrigation canal cried for three days before she was located and rescued. But it turns out she survived much more than that. DAR Animal Rescue came to her rescue after they were alerted of her plight and pulled her free.

The condition the dog was in wasn’t fully apparent at first but when she was at the veterinarian’s they were shocked by what they discovered. Damaged legs. A long thorn stuck down her ear canal. A broken pelvis. Shot with pellets. And thousands upon thousands of maggots eating her flesh. The fact that she survived is a miracle.

Rea, as rescuers named her, spent a week at the hospital and then she went to their shelter. They couldn’t fix all her bones well but she began to step on four legs regardless. She stayed with them for months and underwent a lot of treatments.

“For each one of our rescued animals our goal is an adoption,” DAR writes, “For Rea, having so many issues we thought that this wouldn’t be easy and then Sarah Bagsaw came in…Rea today is adopted, happy and in very good health.”

“We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped her find happiness ,(Hayley, G.A.R., Andrew ) but most of all Sarah who believed in her since the first moment she saw her. Rea is a great dog and she so deserved a good life…We couldn’t be happier for her.”
