Puppy Mill Dog Makes Incredible Transformation After Rescue

Milton was the first dog out of the house. That house was where over 100 dogs had been kept in alleged neglect by a Havanese breeder in Maryland. When rescuers from Humane World for Animals picked Milton up, he was lethargic and covered in dirty, matted fur, so they rushed him to emergency care.

At first, they thought he was a brown-haired dog, but he was so caked in feces that they were surprised to discover a white-and-beige pup underneath once he was groomed. He also suffered from severe dental disease and painful ear infections that needed treatment. But now, Milton is making an amazing recovery.

“He seemed to have all but given up until our Animal Rescue Team found him,” says Humane World for Animals. “Now he’s clean, cared for and well on his way to living the life he deserves. He’s truly a different dog!”

Where Milton was raised is the all-too-common conditions for dogs raised by unethical breeders and puppy mills. Be sure you know what questions to ask and what to look out for if you decided to purchase a puppy instead of adopting one from a shelter or rescue.

John Goodwin, senior managing director of Humane World for Animals’ Stop Puppy Mills campaign, had this advice to share: “This situation underscores something we know all too well—you can’t rely on adorable photos, AKC-celebrated pedigrees, or assurances from pet stores and online platforms that claim to evaluate breeders to ensure your puppy got the best possible start. We have resources available to help evaluate responsible breeders and avoid puppy mills, but visiting in-person, looking at the parents and asking yourself ‘Would I want to live like this?’ is perhaps the most critical tip.”
