Overlooked Mastiff Spends 9 Months in Shelter Before Finding Her ‘Unicorn Home’

Bertha needed what Harleigh, Director of Border Tails Rescue, called a “unicorn home.” The seven-year-old English Mastiff had been overlooked at the Northbrook, Illinois shelter for nine months. But thanks to a little viral fame—and a 2,000-mile journey—Bertha has finally found her forever home.

When Bertha first arrived at the shelter last September, staff did everything they could to show how sweet and easygoing the big dog was, taking her to multiple adoption events. But potential adopters thought she was either too big or too old. That’s when Eric and Joey, who run a popular TikTok channel where they jog with shelter dogs, came to visit.

The pair learned that Bertha had been used for breeding at a puppy mill before being rescued. Since no one at the shelter had shown any interest in the 170-pound pup, they decided to feature the “staff favorite” in one of their videos.

Two thousand miles away in Oregon, April saw the video and cried. She later told the shelter that she’s “not a crier,” but something about Bertha struck a chord. She reached out, wanting to give Bertha a home.

The shelter thought April’s home sounded perfect: a fenced, three-acre property with no other pets. The only problem? Getting Bertha there. Flying wasn’t ideal, and transporting her with other dogs wasn’t a good option as Bertha isn’t comfortable around other dogs. So Eric and Joey decided to drive her there themselves.

But first it was time for a bon voyage party. Bertha was all smiles.

Three long days later, Bertha arrived to meet April. And the moment she stepped out of the car, it was as if she knew she was home.

Bertha happily greeted April, followed her into the house, ate a special treat and then explored her new yard.

Now, Bertha is spending her days eating grass and lounging with her new mom. After everything she’s been through, it’s heartwarming to see she’s finally found her “unicorn home.”
