Dog Stands Guard Over Mine Shaft for 4 Days Until Best Friend Found and Rescued

When dogs Penny and Teddy escaped through a gate accidentally left open at the Martland family’s farm, they disappeared without a trace.

For four nights, the Australian family searched for the dogs, growing increasingly worried and desperate to find the pair. Every morning, the kids, Tom and James Martland, asked if there had been any sign of the beloved dogs. And every morning, the answer was no.

A lucky break came when a nearby resident heard barking coming from the forest. When they went to investigate, they found Penny barking above a mine shaft. Teddy had fallen down the eight-metre hole and Penny had stayed with him, trying to get help for her canine brother.

The children were anxious about how Teddy was doing down in the mine, but Teddy was clearly thrilled when volunteer rescuers with Country Fire Authority lifted him out—his tail wagged the entire way up and into the arms of his relieved family.

The two dogs are now back home getting lots of cuddles and attention, no doubt relieved their adventure is over after a few ruff days.
