Search and Rescue Dogs Race Against Time to Find Earthquake Survivors in Venezuela
As rescue teams race against time in earthquake-ravaged Venezuela, some of the most important lifesavers on the scene have four paws.
Specialized search-and-rescue dogs from around the world have joined the massive effort to find survivors buried beneath collapsed buildings after the devastating earthquakes that have claimed more than 1,400 lives and left tens of thousands of people missing.
Elite K9 teams, including units from Spain’s ERICAM and Military Emergency Unit (UME), are carefully searching through mountains of concrete and debris, using their incredible sense of smell to detect signs of life that rescuers on the surface could never find.
Time is critical. Rescue experts say the first 48 to 72 hours offer the best chance of finding survivors alive, making every minute—and every alert from these remarkable dogs—count.
While their human partners dig through the rubble, these highly trained dogs are helping lead them to people who might otherwise never be found.
In the midst of heartbreak, these canine heroes are giving families something priceless…hope.
