‘Shy Guy Adventure Dog’ Waiting Over 1000 Days to Be Adopted
Good things come to those who wait. At least that’s what a dog named Syrup is hoping. The homeless dog has been with the Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) for over 1000 days.
“He’s the sweetest 4-year-old boy who’s been in a foster home for a bit now so he has all his house manners down and knows exactly how to be the best boy ever,” AAWL shares on Facebook. “He’s come such a long way and has won over the hearts of staff, volunteers, fosters, and basically any person he encounters.”

Syrup was rescued as a stray after surviving alone in the desert. It was his current foster mom that first noticed him. Meow PHX writes, “First, I’m the person who spotted him as a stray and have been with him for every step of his journey.”
It took Syrup some time to get healthy physically and mentally. “As a stray, it took time to teach him trust, self-confidence, and just how to be a dog. Having survived solo in the desert, he also had to put on weight and get healthy,” says Meow PHX.

She notes, “This shy guy adventure dog is one of a kind. As he’s slow to trust and famous for playing favorites, loving Syrup is an exercise in humility & patience. He’s as sweet and stubborn as they make ‘em.”
Syrup loves going on hikes, loves tennis balls, and going for dips in swimming pool. His foster mom thinks he will thrive in a low-key, adults-only household, preferably active retired or work-from-home.

She noted that he’s “a perfect gentleman, he’s house-trained with impeccable manners.”
Syrup does take anti-seizure medication, which he’ll take easily if it’s wrapped in cream cheese. As to why he has seizures it’s still a bit of a mystery but he’s responding well to treatment. Because of his time surviving in the desert he has a strong flight impulse and would need a well-fenced yard and people who “understand that he’s just not a trustworthy wander-off-leash guy. On-leash, he’s always the best-behaved dog on the trails or in the park.”
AAWL noted that the 4-year-old 60 pound dog is “a gentle boy with a gentle heart so he needs some time to warm up first before giving you his whole heart. Once you’re in his circle of trust, there’s no going back! He’ll follow you around like a little shadow and rumor has it he makes a great lounge by the pool partner.”
