Puppy Found Crying in Pain Now ‘So Grateful to Be Touched’ After Rescue
Meet Cobalt, a true survivor. He was found severely injured in rural Missouri by a Good Samaritan, who reached out to Stray Rescue of St. Louis for help. The dog was “crying in pain” from a bullet wound to the back of his neck and had infected, maggot-filled wounds on his head.

Stray Rescue of St. Louis rushed out to meet the Good Samaritan and pick up Cobalt, bringing him back to their emergency clinic.
An examination revealed shrapnel in the back of his head, but the deep wounds on the front of his head were older and likely the result of dog bites.

“We’re wondering if he wandered onto someone’s property for help, and when they saw the wounds they decided to ‘put him out of his misery’. Only they missed,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis wrote. “Thank goodness he had the strength to get to someone else’s property who would make calls and help him!”
“He’s absolutely exhausted and just wanted to lay down. He’s so grateful to be touched and to get all of these maggots off of him,” they continued. He was given plenty of pain medication and antibiotics so that he could rest.

A few days later, after stabilizing, Cobalt got up for his first walk and lapped up the love and attention from his nurse, Zaria.
The next step in his healing journey was to remove the bullet from his head. It’s now out.

Stray Rescue of St. Louis shared, “Today we removed the bullet from Cobalt’s head, it was lodged behind his ear. We are all 1000% smitten with this dog, and we know he’s going to feel so much better now! And to think how kind he’s been to us all, while having a bullet in his head. Dogs are the most amazing, forgiving, resilient angels on this earth!”
