Abandoned Dog Found Chained and Full of Milk by Highway—Then Came a Beautiful Twist

Stray Rescue of St. Louis knows highway rescues are tough, but their latest one was described as “the worst” yet.

“We often say highway rescues are the worst. They are dangerous, nerve-wracking, and sometimes very scary,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis wrote on social media recently. “But we gotta say…THIS is the worst. A caller said this dog has been chained here for days. When we arrived, we discovered…she was full of milk. Our heart dropped instantly.”

They arrived to find a small husky mix they named Yippe Ki-Yay staring out at them. Her puppies were nowhere to be seen, and there were no surveillance cameras around to help identify who may have dumped her. They could only guess the dog’s puppies were at someone’s house (likely that of a backyard breeder) who, they suspect, will not get the puppies vaccinated or spayed and neutered.

“They’ll try to sell them, and when they don’t sell them all, god knows what they’ll do with the rest,” the rescuers wrote. “They deemed the mother no longer needed. So they tied her up and walked away.”

They freed her and walked her around the area on a long leash to see if she would lead them somewhere, but she had no idea where she was. Instead, she “just kept trying to get us to cuddle and comfort her.”

They shared photos of Yippe Ki-Yay looking up at them with trust and gratitude, writing: “We wanted to share her sweet face and the reality of this situation. She’s so sweet and we are smothering her with love. One look at her little face and we are all madly in love with her.”

Once back at the shelter, they cared for her, and she quickly captured the hearts of two caregivers, Hayden and Madison, who took Yippe home to decompress so she wouldn’t be scared at the shelter after all she had endured.

“She slept a lot those first few days, she was so exhausted. A few days later we checked in to see how she was doing,” Stray Rescue wrote. They weren’t expecting the response they got: “Oh yeah, we’re never bringing her back!”

Hayden and Madison have decided that Yippe is at their home to stay. “They filled out her adoption papers, and she’s healing more every day. She loves her new sister, going for walks, and all the comfy places in their home. She’s most likely never been treated this way in her life. Now she gets to be a sister, a daughter, a cherished family member.”
