Clyde is one lucky dog. Recently, the German Shepherd was rushed to South Carolina veterinarian Dr. Margaret Hunt, who saved him from choking to death! Clyde had gotten a rubber dog toy lodged in his throat. Unable to dislodge it, his family rushed him to emergency.
Dr. Margaret Hunt put Clyde on his back and climbed on top of him to remove the toy from his throat. The life-saving moment was caught on video.
Dr. Hunt explains that she used the External Extraction Technique, often abbreviated as XXT. It’s a type of Heimlich maneuver for dogs and, according to Inside Edition, is a technique that’s used by veterinarians across the country. That is not to say that there aren’t different procedures for Heimlich Maneuver for dogs – there is. You can read more here.
The XXT technique involves placing a dog on his/her back and applying pressure appropriately to the chest and neck. It’s important to observe that Dr. Hunt placed Clyde in a special padded/cushioned brace. This probably protects the dog’s spine and keeps him in position. She’s also trained in safely administering XXT.
We’re just happy that Clyde’s family got him to the veterinarian in time and Clyde is recovering.
