‘All She Wanted Was Hugs’: The Sweet Shelter Dog Who Hugged Everyone Finally Finds Her Forever Home

There’s nothing more comforting than a warm hug from your best friend. And at The Animal Foundation (TAF), a 5-year-old pup named Zar made sure everyone got at least one tight squeeze a day.

From the moment Zar, a white pit bull mix, walked through the Las Vegas shelter’s doors, she instantly stole the staff’s hearts. She may not have had a home at the time, but she clearly knew how to connect with the people around her.

“We have never seen a shelter dog like Zar. All she wants is hugs. From everyone,” they wrote on Facebook and shared a video as evidence.

Her affection quickly became part of daily life at the shelter. While many dogs showed love in their own ways, Zar had a very special routine.

“She presses herself into people and completely melts into them — and will happily stay there as long as you’ll let her,” TAF wrote on their website. “Because of this, we’ve started calling her ‘The Hugging Shelter Dog.’”

Zar enjoyed other shelter activities too—playing with fellow pups and happily devouring snacks—but her favorite moments were the quiet ones spent leaning into the people she trusted.

“Zar is a total love muffin whose second favorite place in the world is resting her chin right in your hand,” TAF wrote. “She’ll gaze up at you like you’re her whole universe — and honestly, it’s impossible not to melt.”

Despite her loving personality, Zar was passed over again and again by potential adopters. Still, the staff never lost hope. They continued sharing her story online, believing the right family would eventually see what made her so special.

And one day, that moment finally came.

Zar met a couple who received one of her famous hugs—and this time, it was the hug that would last a lifetime. The shelter later shared the joyful update that their beloved “hugging shelter dog” had found her forever home.

“She’s doing amazing and has settled in perfectly. Most of the time she’s laying on someone, curled up in a ball, or sprawled out sleeping like a baby,” The Animal Foundation shared in an update from Zar’s new family. “She’s safe, loved, and right where she belongs!”

Back at the shelter, staff say they already miss Zar’s hugs—but they couldn’t be happier knowing she’s finally where she always belonged.
