Stray Dog Who Saved Three Puppies Not Her Own Wins Scruffts at Crufts
A dog with the compassion of a mother has won the Scruffts prize at this year’s Royal Kennel Club Crufts Dog Show. Every year, tens of thousands of dogs participate in the Royal Kennel Club’s Crufts Dog Show. Nearly 20,000 dogs and their handlers vied for Best in Show, and Bruin, a beautiful Cumber Spaniel, was crowned the winner. However, there’s another competition at the show that tugs at the heartstrings and champions rescue dogs: Scruffts.
Scruffts at Crufts celebrates mixed-breed dogs, no matter their age or background. Unlike the pedigree-focused events, this competition judges dogs based on character, with categories like “Most Handsome,” “Golden Oldie,” and “Good Citizen Dog.” The aim is to promote responsible dog ownership and highlight the special bond between dogs and their families.
This year’s winner is Marnie. She was rescued by Lyn Freeman from a Romanian kill shelter at two and a half years old. Now 9, she’s considered a “Golden Oldie” and has participated in the competition for two years before finally winning the prize of Scruffts top dog.

When she was found, Marnie was caring for three German Shepherd cross puppies that weren’t her own. She was even producing milk to feed them, ultimately saving their lives.
When she first arrived at Lyn’s home, she was so frightened that she hid under a table for three weeks. Lyn had to carry her around the neighborhood because she refused to walk. But because Lyn rescued Marnie during the COVID pandemic, the dog had plenty of time to decompress and adjust to her new home. Now she’s loving and calm and can even stand up in front of a crowd of thousands of cheering people!
You can watch Marnie and the other finalists in the video below.
