Puppies Rescued From South Georgia Shelter Just Before It Burned to the Ground in Wildfires
Nineteen puppies rescued from wildfires in South Georgia are finally safe after a frightening escape from a shelter that was destroyed by the flames.
The puppies were transported on a five-hour journey to the Atlanta Humane Society’s crisis response center in Marietta, where staff were waiting to provide immediate care. Many arrived shaken, dirty, and exhausted, showing clear signs of the stress they had endured.
“Our Operation Humane team went to Blackshear, Georgia… to bring back 19 dogs,” said Caroline Parks with Atlanta Humane Society, who explained the rescue effort was part of the response to the fast-moving wildfires.
At the shelter, each puppy was given food, water, and a safe place to rest. While most did not have visible injuries, the emotional toll was evident as some clung to handlers for comfort while others quietly curled up to recover.
“Thankfully, most of them don’t have any visible wounds,” Parks said. “But that’s why they came here… to recover from the traumatic experience.”
Now in a place of safety, the focus is on helping them heal. As they recover and are medically cleared, the puppies will be made available for adoption—offering each one a chance at a new life far from the devastation they escaped.
