Rescued from Neglect, Mildred the Mastiff Leaves a Legacy of Love
When Mildred, an English Mastiff, entered Lee Asher’s life three years ago, no one could have imagined just how deeply she would touch the hearts of so many. Rescued by the Tacoma Humane Society, she arrived skin and bones, suffering from numerous health issues—including Lyme disease—after nearly nine years of neglect.
But at the Asher House, Mildred began to heal. And then, she began to thrive.
Just a few weeks ago, Lee shared the heartbreaking news that Mildred had been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer that was quickly spreading through her body. He canceled several events to spend whatever time he had left with her.
He also posted a moving retrospective video, looking back at her incredible rescue and healing journey.
Sadly, their time together was shorter than anyone had hoped. This past week, Lee shared that it was time to say goodbye. Mildred had begun to grow uncomfortable—not in pain, but in discomfort. So she got one last cheeseburger, said farewell to all her friends at the Asher House, and peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
Lee wrote:
“Mildred will live on forever in my heart as well as in many others. She was always by my side and her spirit will continue to be too. I will miss her deeply and I will live my life and continue my mission the way she would want me to. Thank you all so much for loving her and for being such a beautiful part of her story.”
Run free, dear Mildred.
