Man Adopts Unwanted Pitbull—Then the Dog Suddenly Can’t Walk
Colby first met Maverick at an animal shelter, where he learned that no one wanted him because he was a pit bull mix. Maverick had been found in a cornfield, and despite being overlooked by others, the two instantly clicked. Colby decided to adopt him—that was back in 2017.
They loved doing everything together: playing outside, running, and staying active. But in 2022, Maverick didn’t want to get off the couch. Colby didn’t think much of it until Maverick tried to jump down and his back legs wouldn’t move. He was diagnosed with intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) and was in excruciating pain. On a scale of 1 to 5, his condition was rated a 4. Colby immediately focused on helping his best friend adjust to life without the use of his back legs.
He got Maverick a wheelchair, and although Maverick was terrified at first, he eventually grew to love it. Now he gets excited to have his wheels put on and head out for a run. He’s no longer in pain, he’s still loving life, and he’s taught Colby to focus on the positive.
“Maverick has taught me to just love. Just stop and love,” Colby said. “Stop and give someone a hug. Stop and tell someone what they mean to you genuinely. And I try to do that every single day.”
