Lifeguards Rescue Drowning Dog Just as Hope of Finding Her Was Almost Gone

A dog swept out to sea had a dramatic rescue after she bolted from her Airbnb and plunged into the ocean at Dog Beach in San Diego, California.

Brandon and Alexis were visiting the area with Sadie, their 5-year-old black Lab mix, and their other dog when Sadie suddenly ran off. Her AirTag pinged at Dog Beach, and by the time they got there, she had already fallen into the water. She had been spotted running off the jetty. With strong currents and heavy swells, visibility was poor, and San Diego lifeguards launched jet skis to search for her. After an hour with no signs of Sadie, it was nearly time to call off the rescue. Brandon and Alexis were heartbroken but held onto a glimmer of hope. The lifeguards decided to make one final sweep—that’s one lifeguard spotted a small shape in the water nearly three-quarters of a mile out. It was Sadie.

Brandon and Alexis burst into tears when they heard the news. Sadie is now recovering; she’s expected to be okay, though her paws are torn from trying to climb the jetty rocks. The two lifeguards, who both have dogs themselves, said they were grateful to help reunite the family and that moments like this make their work worthwhile.
