Heroic Doberman Who Saved Man From Grizzly Bear Attack is Honored

A 10-year-old Doberman in Canada is being recognized after saving his dad from a grizzly bear attack last spring in Cochrane, Alberta. Craig Campbell was out for a walk with his dog, Night, when they surprised a grizzly sow and her two cubs in a wooded area. The bear began to huff loudly, and Campbell thought, “I’m about to die.” As the bear reared onto her hind legs, she stood about 6.5 feet tall (2 metres), looming over him. He didn’t have time to take out his bear spray and believed the worst was moments away.

That’s when Night sprang into action and leapt between Campbell and the bear. Night’s interruption distracted the bear long enough for Campbell to pull out the spray, giving him hope for a chance to escape. The bear dropped down and ended up backing off and walked away all thanks to Night’s intervention.

Campbell credits years of dog training and a strong bond with Night for saving his life. Recently, Purina Canada recognized Night’s heroism and inducted him into their Animal Hall of Fame.

Note: Bear experts and wildlife educators advise hikers to keep their dogs on a leash when in bear country, as it is far safer for you, your dog, and the bear when your pet is under control.
