Employee Fired for Helping Warm Stray Dog Outside Restaurant Sparks Public Backlash

In a story that started with heartbreak—but ended with hope—a simple act of kindness reminded people everywhere just how powerful compassion can be.

In the Russian city of Chelyabinsk, a stray dog named Dodobonya had been living outside a local pizza shop for over a year. Loved by staff and customers alike, she slept on the porch at night, often kept warm by employees who quietly looked after her during the brutal winter.

Then temperatures dropped to -20°C (4°F).

When delivery driver Mikhail Savitsky arrived for his shift and saw Dodobonya lying in the snow, he didn’t hesitate. He grabbed a blanket, gently covered her, and went on to complete his delivery route.

“I arrived [at work] and saw the dog lying in the snow,” Mikhail said. “I grabbed a blanket, covered the dog, went in, picked up the order, got in the car, drove off, and delivered the order.

“By the time I was driving back to the pizzeria, the manager had already informed me I was fired and kicked me out of the delivery person’s meeting. I’d delivered one order that shift, and it took me 10 or 15 minutes.”

That small, humane act cost him his job. Staff were then informed anyone helping the dog would be fired.

News of his dismissal spread quickly—and people were outraged. Animal lovers rallied behind Mikhail, flooding Dodo Pizza, the restaurant chain company with calls for a boycott and demanding accountability. For many, this wasn’t just about one worker—it was about standing up for kindness.

The restaurant insisted Mikhail was fired for inefficiency. But Mikhail had kept messages. As evidence, he showed screenshots of the message that the new manager had sent to all employees where she said: “The next person to hide the dog will go after the dog. I’ve warned you one last time. If you want to help her, take her home!”

Amid the backlash, something important happened.

Dodobonya was taken to a local animal shelter, where she could be looked after and find a home.

And soon after, the company’s founder stepped in with a public apology.

He acknowledged the mistake, offered Mikhail his job back (possibly in a role focused on animal welfare initiatives), and announced meaningful changes moving forward: all locations would become pet-friendly, and the company would begin supporting animal shelters long-term.

What began as one man’s quiet act of compassion turned into something much bigger—a reminder that kindness matters, that people are paying attention, and that when enough voices come together, change can happen.
