Dogs Take On a Porcupine During ‘Sunday Fun Day’ And Still Regret Nothing

Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Dogs Fred and Frank had the opposite of a “Sunday Fun Day” after a surprise run-in with a porcupine. Their dad, Lenny (TikTokker @trailerparkapparelco), shared a viral video of the pair getting a ride to the vet. Both of their muzzles were riddled with porcupine quills—but despite what had to be a painful encounter, the two pups looked pretty unfazed.

Viewers couldn’t help but comment on the mischievous duo. “Through their pain they are still loving their Sunday ride,” one person observed. Lenny replied: “True.” Another viewer said, “Fred and Frank regret nothing.” Lenny agreed: “No they don’t.” “It’s obvious they decided on Acupuncture Day over a Spa Day,” joked someone else.

Lenny later shared a follow-up video of Fred and Frank after their vet visit—both now quill-free but a bit groggy from pain meds. He captioned it: “Short road trip to the city and a few hundred dollars later. F those darn porcupines.”

Both dogs got pup cups as a comfort for surviving the ordeal.

Viewers noted that Fred and Frank looked like they were drooping their heads “knowing they cost dad money” and were “completely humiliated and ready for bed.” But Lenny explained they were just a little sleepy from the medications.

However, apparently, rest wasn’t enough to stop the mischief: not long after recovering, one of the dogs tried to approach the porcupine again. “Did he learn his lesson? No. He ain’t learned his lesson…he got right back into the middle of it,” wrote Lenny.

That prompted a viewer to ask: “How many porcupines are in your neighborhood?!? They are boxers. They are goofballs. They don’t know what ‘lessons’ are!” Lenny responded: “Too many.”

Another chimed in: “Does the porcupine have any quills left?” “Not many,” Lenny joked.

Dwayne, a fellow dog parent, added: “Our dogs have helped themselves about 15 times each this last several months with porcupines. They won’t learn!!!”

Several viewers agreed—porcupines are keeping vets in business. Thankfully, Fred and Frank are on the mend and will be just fine.

What to Do If Your Dog Encounters a Porcupine

Good humor aside, removing porcupine quills from a dog is serious business. Here’s what every pet parent should know:

Don’t try to pull the quills out yourself.
Porcupine quills are barbed and can break off or burrow deeper if handled incorrectly. Trying to remove them at home can cause more pain and risk infection.

Veterinary care is strongly recommended
Go to the vet immediately. A vet can safely sedate the dog, remove all quills (even hidden ones), and check for internal injuries or embedded fragments.

Don’t cut the quills.
Contrary to myth, cutting quills doesn’t make removal easier. It can actually make it harder by collapsing the shaft and leaving barbs inside.

Watch for complications.
Missed or broken quills can lead to abscesses, infections, or even migrate to vital organs or joints. Keep an eye on your dog and follow your veterinarian’s advice for what to look for and post-treatment care.

Prevent future run-ins.
Dogs often don’t learn from one encounter—especially curious or prey-driven breeds. If you live in porcupine country, consider leashing your dog at night, using lights, or fencing off problem areas.
