Dog Left to Die in Trash Compactor Is Saved by Police Officer Who Later Adopts Him

An abandoned dog is lucky to be alive after being dropped into a trash compactor outside a Los Angeles church. The compactor automatically crushes its contents, but by some miracle, a passerby heard the dog whimpering from inside and immediately called police. Sgt. Nick Beerling arrived just in time to rescue the pup.

Beerling named the dog “Norm,” after Normandie Avenue, where he was found. The 18-year veteran of the Gardena Police Department returned to the animal shelter five days later—not just to check on Norm, but to bring him home.

Beerling decided to adopt the dog, noting that he rescued Norm on his daughter’s birthday and that his daughters had been asking for another dog for some time.

Thrown away like garbage, Norm is now exactly where he belongs—safe, loved, and home.
