Senior Dog Found Shivering on Porch Adopted by the Officers Who Saved Him
A routine call about a stray dog huddled on a porch in Milford, Michigan, turned into an unexpectedly heartwarming rescue when the officers who saved the senior pup from the bitter cold decided to make him one of their own.
It was early February, in the middle of the night, and temperatures had dipped below freezing when Cassidy Blackburn’s dogs alerted her to something outside her home. When she went to look, she saw a black shadow cross her porch and spotted a black dog shivering in the cold. She canvassed her neighborhood for around 90 minutes to see if anyone was missing a dog, but no one was. Unable to bring him inside because of her own dogs, she called the police.
Officers arrived and placed the friendly senior pup in their vehicle. He had no microchip or tags. After searching the area for an owner, they brought him back to the station to warm up and bought him food. The sweet dog spent time outside Officer Craig’s office (he was away on holiday), and before long, officers had given him a name: Lil’ Craig.

MPD wrote on Facebook: “During his visit to MPD, we could see he was mild mannered and sweet. Posts on social media didn’t yield an owner so we eventually had to turn him over to animal control.”
While Lil’ Craig waited at the Oakland County Animal Control shelter, the Milford Police Department kept tabs on him, hoping someone would claim him — even though they already missed him themselves. They commented on Facebook, “[H] e would’ve been a great station dog! This guy was so good and friendly we can’t believe no one’s claimed him yet. We couldn’t even put him in our kennel – he just wandered the offices all day.”

When the mandatory one-week hold time passed, the Milford Police Department still couldn’t believe Lil’ Craig had not been claimed, so they decided to adopt him themselves. He had warmed so many hearts during his first stay that they didn’t want to see anything bad happen to him ever again. “Rather than leaving his future to chance, we adopted him,” they wrote.
Now Lil’ Craig lives at the station, where he’s spoiled with attention and free to wander the halls as he pleases.

MPD wrote, “Today, ‘Lil’ Craig’ is a cherished member of MPD. He’s trying to figure everything out, and so are we. He’s recovering from some medical procedures, but adapting well! The doc tells us he’s around 9 years old, missing a few teeth, one of his ears won’t stand up, and he doesn’t hear very well, but we’re going to give this old guy the best home we can. His personality is already bringing smiles and some needed stress relief to our staff.”

“He’s a little slow paced, loves to be around people, and is actually quite a ham. He’s going to live here at the station and already has a run of the place. If you’re ever in, don’t forget to ask to see him,” they added.
Lil’ Craig has gone from an unwanted senior dog to having a never-ending group of friends.
