Boy Wears Gold Tux to Adopt the Dog He Always Dreamed Of

Ten-year-old “Cai” Cairo Hall had wanted a dog since he was three years old and this summer, his wish finally came true.

Cai and his mom, Marvy Hall, visited PAWS Shelter of Central Texas as part of Cai’s summer “bucket list” to look at dogs. That’s when he met Waylon, a one-year-old pup who had spent 95 days at the shelter after being rescued from an overcrowded shelter where he may have been at risk of euthanasia. For Cai, it was “love at first sight.”

They returned to the shelter the next day, and this time Cai came prepared with a list of thoughtful questions for the staff. He asked if Waylon was afraid of anything, how to prevent heartworm, and how to register a microchip, among others. Shelter staff were deeply impressed. Many adults don’t come in as prepared or as informed as Cai, who Marvy says regularly watches YouTube videos about science, facts, and dog care.

Staff suggested the family take Waylon home on a foster-to-adopt trial. It only took one night for Cai to know Waylon was the one. To celebrate adoption day, Cai dressed up in a special gold tuxedo to mark the occasion. He proudly returned to the shelter to sign the adoption papers and officially welcome Waylon home.

Marvy shared that they hadn’t planned on adopting a dog that day, but it turned out to be the best decision they could have made. Now, Cai and Waylon are inseparable, and she says she’s constantly amazed by how much Cai already knows about training and caring for his new best friend.

Many people remarked how wonderful Cai and Waylon’s story is. “What an amazing little lad! He is more responsible than many adults,” said one person. “We need more people like him in this world.”

Another wrote, “What a smart kid, a lucky dog, and a great mom!” One other said, “This made me cry. What a kind and caring young man. He will go far, and now he’ll have his best friend with him!”
