Bernese Mountain Dog Becomes a Hero After Finding a Freezing Lost Dog
Two internet-famous dogs earned an even bigger loyal following after helping save the life of a missing dog.
Bunsen the Bernese Mountain Dog and his Golden Retriever sister, Beaker, regularly appear on social media thanks to their owners, Jason and Kris Zackowski.
Several years ago, the two dogs were out for a winter walk with Jason near their home in Alberta, Canada, when Bunsen suddenly ran off into the woods and wouldn’t come back when called.
This was highly unusual behavior for the normally obedient pup, so Jason went to investigate. That’s when he spotted a dog slumped on a log in the snow at the bottom of a creek bed. Bunsen was standing guard over the freezing dog, who was unable to walk and suffering from severe cold exposure.
Jason immediately contacted Kris and their son, Adam, for help. Adam rushed over with a sled, food, and blankets, while Kris brought Beaker and Bunsen back home.

Father and son worked carefully to build trust with the frightened dog and get her safely onto the sled. The poor dog’s eyes were “really messed up,” and her back legs seemed to be causing her intense pain, but they managed to lift her onto the sled and pull her three kilometres back to their home.
While Kris waited anxiously for them to return, she searched online to see if anyone had reported a missing dog. Soon, she found a photo that looked exactly like the dog they had rescued. A dog named Bailey had been missing all night.
When Kris contacted Bailey’s family, they were overjoyed. Within an hour of the rescue, Bailey’s owners arrived to bring her home.
With Alberta’s below-freezing winter temperatures, Bailey likely would not have survived another night. But thanks to Bunsen’s instincts and his family’s quick actions she is alive and well today.
