Alone and Injured, Dog Waits in Hollow Log for Someone to Save Him

Recently, outdoorsman Devin Sedotal was exploring a Louisiana bayou when he noticed something unusual: a small, frightened dog sitting in the brush and staring at him. Sedotal snapped a photo and posted it on Facebook, asking, “Did anyone lose a hunting dog?”

The photo quickly spread, catching the attention of both Mariah Chock Villalobos Rescue Center – Life 4 Paws and Alyssa Muse with Aviary Creature Rescue. Villalobos couldn’t reach the dog due to the distance and a storm, but Muse was able to.

She jumped in a boat with Sedotal and headed out to rescue the pup from the swamp. They had to wait out the rainstorm, but once it passed, they returned to the spot where Sedotal had last seen the dog.

When they arrived, the ground was muddy, and at first, they couldn’t find him. Then Sedotal spotted the little dog huddled and hiding in a hollowed-out log. The pup looked up at them, hope in his eyes.

They wrapped him in a blanket and carried him out of his swampy prison. It was immediately clear that he had suffered a great deal.

There was a severe wound on his back leg and an emaciated body. They rushed him to a veterinarian, where the full extent of his injuries was revealed. X-rays showed that the dog’s body was filled with bullet fragments, and veterinarians also discovered multiple puncture wounds, indicating he had been attacked at some point.

Despite everything he had endured, Muse says, “Our little survivor is thriving,” adding that “his happy tail…has not stopped since we found him!”

The dog — now named Devin — was stabilized and taken under the care of Villalobos Life 4 Paws (VRC). He has already been neutered, though he tested positive for heartworm and will soon begin treatment. If you’d like to support Devin’s ongoing medical care, VRC has a fundraiser for him here.
