The Concept of Alpha Dog and Its Effect on Dog Training

Nowadays, many dog behavior experts advocate for positive reinforcement as the most effective and humane way to train a dog. But for decades—and still today in some circles—the “alpha dog” concept, rooted in dominance-based training theory, has influenced how people interact with their pets. The 2012 documentary Tough Love: A Meditation on Dominance and Dogs explores this enduring idea. It traces the origins of the “alpha” model from flawed 1940s wolf studies to its widespread adoption by both professional trainers and everyday dog owners.

The problem many dog trainers are now recognizing is that this theory is based solely on wolves in captivity and not on dogs. A number of experts discuss the different, and sometimes controversial, dog training techniques that have resulted from this theory.

The late Dr. Sophia Yin, a veterinarian who recognized many dogs were dying because of behavioral issues, is among those who describe how their personal experiences with “alpha” training put them on the path to find a better way to understand and train their dogs through positive reinforcement.

This important film offers insight into how we can build better relationships with our dogs through more compassionate and scientifically sound training methods.
