Belgian Malinois’ ‘Air Chomps’ Behind His Owner, Sparks Debate Online

A woman recently discovered her Belgian Malinois was doing something very strange whenever she turned her back — so she decided to record it.

As she bent down to put on her shoes, the dog could be seen repeatedly making little biting or “snapping” motions in the air behind her back. But every single time she turned around to look at him, he immediately stopped and acted perfectly normal again.

Some viewers found the video unsettling, with one person joking they would never be able to sleep with the dog in the house. Others were simply confused, wondering whether the dog was being aggressive, playful, overstimulated, or just incredibly excited.

But many Belgian Malinois owners recognized the behavior instantly.

Several explained that what people were seeing was likely “air biting” or “air snapping,” something commonly associated with high-drive working breeds like Malinois. Owners described it as an outlet for intense excitement or pent-up energy — especially when the dogs are anticipating something fun, like a walk or play session.

As one Malinois owner joked, “they are essentially freaks you have to tire out.”

The breed has even earned the nickname “malligators” because of their intense energy levels and tendency to use their mouths while excited or engaged. While air snapping can sometimes also be linked to frustration or overstimulation, many viewers felt this particular dog simply looked thrilled that an adventure was about to happen.
