Two Avalanche Rescue Dog Legends Retire After 10 Years Protecting Whistler’s Mountains
After 10 years of service on the mountains, two four-legged legends are finally hanging up their patrol harnesses.
Eva and Jasper, beloved avalanche rescue dogs at Whistler Blackcomb, officially retired in April after spending the last decade helping keep skiers, snowboarders, and backcountry adventurers safe.
As part of the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association (CARDA) program, the pair worked alongside ski patrol searching for human scent beneath deep snow during avalanche emergencies. Eva, an American field Labrador, and Jasper, a golden retriever, trained together and became inseparable partners on the mountain — trusted not only for their skill, but for the comfort and joy they brought to everyone around them.
For years, their days began with early morning sweeps, long patrols, and intense rescue work in some of the harshest winter conditions imaginable. They became familiar faces across the Sea to Sky region, earning a reputation as true legends among the mountain community.
Now, after a decade of hard work, they’re stepping into a much-deserved retirement where they will enjoy swimming, belly rubs, scratches behind the ears, and all the treats they can handle.
While the next generation of rescue dogs prepares to take over, Eva and Jasper leave behind an incredible legacy — one built on loyalty, courage, and countless hours spent protecting others.
