Mysterious Discovery of Dozens of Dead Canines Found Washed Ashore On Beaches Raises Concern in Washington Community

Residents of Guemes Island in Skagit County, Washington are searching for answers after a troubling series of discoveries along local beaches.

Since March 26, between 20 and 25 canine carcasses have been found washed ashore on Guemes Island and nearby La Conner. The findings began with six animals, followed by additional discoveries over the next several days, raising alarm in the close-knit community.

Uncertainty has fueled concern, with many residents questioning what animals are involved—whether they are dogs, coyotes, or foxes—and what caused their deaths. Have the animals been skinned or are they simply severely decomposed?

Rumors are running rampant as to who may be responsible. An unknown animal abuser? Witches? Some community members are saying the animals are likely foxes and were used as crab bait by commercial fishermen, PNW Daily reported.

Local officials say the situation is deeply unsettling. Fire Chief Olivia Cole noted that the discoveries are not only distressing for residents—many of whom are passionate animal lovers—but could also impact tourism in an area known as a peaceful vacation destination.

The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Unit is actively investigating these incidents.

“The investigation is active and ongoing and I will not be releasing many new details,” Lieutenant Jeff Willard with the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday. “At this time, I cannot comment on those rumors.”

For now, residents will have to wait for answers. Authorities have sent samples for forensic testing, with results expected in the coming weeks.

Anyone with information related to these incidents is encouraged to contact the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office or Skagit 911 to speak with a deputy or Animal Control Officer.
