‘Our Three Best Days of Work’: Police Care for Lost Dog Found 1,500 Miles From Her Family
Nearly two years after disappearing from her backyard in Texas, a little schnauzer named Koko was found more than 1,500 miles away, wandering alone in New Jersey.
Back in May 2024, Koko had slipped under a fence and never came back. Her family searched, hoping she’d return, but as time passed, they feared the worst.
Then came a call they never expected.
Police officers in Clark, New Jersey had found a stray dog and scanned her microchip—revealing she belonged to a family all the way in Glenn Heights, Texas.
When officers reached out, Koko’s owner, Gloria Greer, could hardly believe it.
“My God, I’m so excited,” she told WFAA. “I was screaming through the house. I told my husband, ‘They found Koko—but she’s in New Jersey.’”

While her family rushed to make travel plans (helped by support from their community) the officers made sure Koko was safe and cared for. Instead of sending her to a shelter, they kept her at the station, where she was bathed, fed, walked, and given a cozy place to rest.

“We’re going to chip in and take care of this dog,” one officer shared. “It was probably everyone’s three best days of work.”

And then, the moment they had all been waiting for. When Koko’s family finally arrived, there was no doubt. She knew them.

“Without a doubt, Koko most certainly recognized Mom and Dad,” police said.
Exactly how she ended up so far from home remains a mystery—but one thing is certain, she never forgot where she belonged.
