Bodycam Video Shows Police Saving Dog From Burning Home Moments Before Fiery Collapse

Sometimes a rescue comes down to just a few seconds. A terrified dog was trapped inside a burning home as smoke and flames quickly took over.

A terrified dog was trapped inside a burning home as smoke and flames quickly took over. If help hadn’t arrived when it did, he likely wouldn’t have made it out.

But New Jersey Egg Harbour Township police officers Christopher Wagner, Darren Hewitt, Lewis Orlando, and Sgt. Steven McKenna rushed inside the house, determined to search every room and make sure no life was left behind.

As they moved through the home, the smoke thickened and the heat grew unbearable. “It was like a super hot oven,” Sgt. McKenna later said.

Then they found a dog.

But the frightened pup didn’t realize they were there to help—and kept running away from the officers trying to save him. Dramatic body cam footage shows the tense moments as the officers tried to corner the dog while the fire and smoke rapidly intensified around them.

“He’s kind of running away from us. I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this isn’t good,’” McKenna told NBC 10 News.

The officers tried to block off exits as precious seconds slipped away. Then, in a stroke of luck, a neighbor rushed inside to help them catch the terrified dog.

With the dog finally in their arms, McKenna knew they had no time left. “I was like, ‘We need to get out of there as quick as possible.’” All three dashed for the exit.

It turned out to be just in time. Only minutes later, the house collapsed in a massive fiery crash as the roof caved in, leaving even firefighters stunned by the destruction.

After the blaze was extinguished, homeowner Paul Remer expressed his gratitude. He said, “I want to thank the police officers, the fire department, and citizens in general for what they’ve done to help my family.”
