‘Release the Wieners!’ Dachshund Race on Ice Has Crowd Cheering

A different kind of athlete recently took to the ice at the Green Bay Gamblers hockey arena — and every one of them had paws.

It was delightful pandemonium as dozens of Dachshunds were released for the sports organization’s annual Wiener Dog Race. As the dogs and their families lined up at the starting line, the countdown began. Then the announcer gave the signal: “Release the Wieners!”

And just like that, they were off — pitter-pattering across the ice. One dog wearing a green collar looked like he was about to reach the finish line first, but at the last moment Louie dashed ahead and claimed the crown.

Louie’s mom, accepting the prize, said they had actually trained for the race — and it clearly paid off.
