Dog Won’t Come Inside During Rainstorm — He Wants Mom to Watch His Puddle Jumps

Most dogs would be begging to come inside during a heavy rainstorm. But Dorian isn’t most dogs. The playful pup sees a downpour as the perfect opportunity to sprint outside, leap into his favorite giant puddle, and make sure his mom is watching every splash.

Kirsten Garrison, Dorian’s mom, shared the hilarious video of him splashing around. To be fair, there wasn’t thunder and lightning when he first went outside, but the rain was coming down hard — so much so that Kirsten worried what the neighbors might think.

“My neighbors probably think I’m evil with my dog outside in the rainstorm,” she says off camera. “But he doesn’t want to come inside. He wants to run and jump into that puddle over there and wants me to watch him.”

As she talks, Dorian runs up to the door as if he’s ready to come inside. But as soon as Kirsten opens it, he dashes off and leaps straight into the large puddle in the backyard — splash!

“Yep,” says Kirsten, watching him jump into the puddle.

When Dorian runs back to her, she notes that he’ll bang at the door, only to race right back to the puddle again. As he’s about to make a second run, there’s a lightning flash — but that doesn’t deter Dorian. He is determined to show off his puddle-jumping skills once more.

Kirsten writes, “When he was a puppy I conditioned him to love thunderstorms and it worked too well.”

Kirsten now calls Dorian’s rainy activity “the Mud Game.” She shared another video for Dorian’s adoring fans, saying she wanted to “give the people what they want.” And since it was raining again, of course Dorian wanted back outside to play in his favorite puddle.

“It’s like a slip and slide,” jokes one viewer.

“It’s like when you take your kids to the pool and they’re like ‘hey mom watch this’,” comments another viewer.

One person notes, “You know that he loves doing this because he things YOU love it, right? At some point, when he was a puppy, he ran through a puddle and it was the cutest thing you had ever seen and you laughed and told him ‘good job!’ Now his goal is to recreate that moment and make you super happy and proud of him.”

Kirsten answers, “You’re breaking my heart. I love my pup.”

Another viewer notes that many people wouldn’t let their dogs do this because of the cleanup, telling Kirsten that she is “just the sweetest most wonderful human…he is living his best life with you.”

Kirsten answers, “This is so kind!!! Yeah we have our routine down of toweling him off when he comes in, laying quilts over the couches (cause he’s damp!), and mopping the floors the next day.”

Cleanup may take a little extra effort, but for Dorian and Kirsten, the Mud Game is pure joy — rain, puddles, and all.

And for those that might be wondering, Kirsten trained Dorian to be unafraid of thunder by using positive reinforcement training.

She shared on TikTok, “I started by exposing him to the sound of thunder in a controlled environment, associating it with fun activities and rewards. Each time he heard a thunder sound, I would distract him with his favorite toys or treats, creating a positive association with the noise. Over time, his reaction changed dramatically. Instead of hiding or showing signs of fear, he began to associate thunderstorms with playtime and joy. It was incredible to witness his transformation, especially during rainy days when he would happily romp around, embracing the sound of falling rain and thunder.”
