Dog Adopted After 963 Days In Shelter Thanks To Dedicated Couple

For two months, a couple visited the Humane Society of Preble County in Ohio every single day to spend time with a golden Labrador mix named Richie Rich. Richie was a special case at the shelter. He was only 10 months old when he first arrived as a stray, but by the time this couple began to come by, he had already spent two and a half years waiting for a home.

“When he was picked up, he was running with a buddy that has since been adopted. Richie is a little shy with new people, possibly from being chased away from other properties as a stray,” the shelter wrote back in 2023.

“He often wears a worried look on his little face that just makes you want to hug him and tell him it will all be OK! It is well worth getting to know him to find that fun-loving personality hidden inside,” they continued. “He is very loving and would like nothing more than a best friend for adventures.”

Despite being young and adorable, Richie Rich was overlooked time and again, spending a total of 963 days at the shelter before the right people came along. The couple who eventually adopted him were determined to earn his trust. “This wonderful couple were committed to changing Richie’s life and in order for him to trust them, they came every day for almost 2 months. They spent many hours in the outdoor play yard with him, giving special treats, brushing him, and just winning him over.”

Just this past week, they finally brought Richie home, and shelter staff could not be more thrilled. They say families like his new “pawrents” are what keep them motivated. “This is what keeps us coming back,” they wrote. “Thank you for adopting!”
