Newfoundland Dogs Hilariously Show Why They Skip Agility Teams

Newfoundland dogs are renowned for many things—their affection for children, loyalty, bravery, strength, affinity for water, and, of course, their drool. What they aren’t known for is their prowess in agility, a popular dog sport featured in many dog shows and events around the world.

One family, who knows the breed well and has several Newfies in their home, humorously demonstrated the dogs’ agility skills. Instagram user Kernowbears (@kernowbearsnewfoundlands) jokingly captioning their video, “There’s a reason Newfies don’t enter the agility teams at Crufts…”

Although they may not be built for agility courses, Newfoundland dogs have been known to jump out of helicopters and into the water as part of Italy’s lifeguard training program. They have also been trained for dog dancing and even to fetch Christmas trees.

Newfoundlands have a long history as working dogs. Their exceptional strength, endurance, and natural swimming ability make them ideal for water rescue, hauling, and other demanding tasks. While they may not excel at weaving through agility poles like Border Collies, they possess a unique grace and skill set that few breeds can match.

Here’s a Newfie pup named Bernie being trained for water rescue.

Viewers watching the pair of Newfoundland Dogs tackle the agility course gave the two dogs ‘A’ for effort. “Still pretty good,” wrote one viewer.

Another person, who has a Newfie herself, wrote, “This is every Newfie I’ve had.” While another Newfie guardian shared, “The problem is the agility events. If there were events for stealing snacks off the table, barking at deer in the yard, climbing onto the couch, or shedding, my girl Thelma would be a champion.”
