116 Dogs Were About to Be Euthanized — Until Volunteers Raced Against Time to Save Them
In a desperate, last-minute effort, 116 adoptable dogs — many mothers and puppies — were rescued from euthanasia and flown from Los Angeles to Chicago on March 24. The emergency flight was organized in just 48 hours by Wings of Rescue and Paws for Life K9 Rescue. “It isn’t a second chance at life for them. It is their only chance at life,” said Rick Brody of Wings of Rescue.
The crisis began with the largest animal seizure in LA County history. Authorities raided a Lake Hughes property on March 20, removing 250 dogs and 66 cats. With all seven county shelters overwhelmed, some dogs already in care were slated for euthanasia to make room for the new arrivals.

“Pets already in the shelter system, including moms and puppies, suddenly became at risk. Puppies as young as 12 weeks old were placed on euthanasia lists due to lack of space. Yesterday morning, we launched an emergency flight, moving a planeload of pets from Los Angeles to the greater Chicago area,” Wings of Rescue wrote. “Flying them created critical space so shelters can take in and manage the dogs from this case.”
Volunteers sprang into action when shelters issued urgent pleas for help, focusing on the puppies and their mothers most at risk. They worked tirelessly through the night, preparing the dogs for transport and getting them safely to the airport. Soon the tarmac was loaded with crates of dogs to be loaded into the plane for transport.

The rescued pups landed in Indiana and were placed with Chicago-area rescues for adoption, while LA County waived adoption fees for the remaining animals. Despite the relief, the volunteers know the work is never done. “I get momentary relief… then absolute dread for the ones we didn’t get,” shared a volunteer.
Alex Tonner, CEO of Paws for Life K9 Rescue, said the mission highlights the dedication of volunteers and the community. “We do this once a month with these animals, but this one was really special because of all those puppies that were slated for euthanasia.”

Thanks to the tireless efforts of these heroes, 116 dogs now have a future filled with hope, love, and families ready to give them the second chance they deserve. Visit Wings of Rescue and Paws for Life K9 Rescue to support their rescue efforts.
