17-Year-Old Emaciated Dog Shivering in the Cold Finds New Loving Home Just Hours Later

A senior dog found shivering in the cold in San Antonio, Texas is on her way to a loving home. Eleanor was saved by San Antonio Animal Care Officer Martinez who “rushed to the rescue after receiving a call about an old pup in dire conditions during the hard freeze,” San Antonio ACS wrote on Facebook.

Temperatures had dipped to 28 degrees Fahrenheit (-2 C) with a wind chill of 17 degrees F (-8 C) and Officer Martinez could see the dog, now named Eleanor, was visibly shivering and severely emaciated. She also had scabs covering her face. “After a hard conversation with our officers, Eleanor’s previous caregivers made the compassionate decision to surrender her to our care,” San Antonio ACS continued. “Officer Martinez swiftly brought her to ACS for immediate medical attention.”

Despite Eleanor’s previous owners surrendering the dog, the shelter reassures people that Eleanor’s case is “an active cruelty investigation.” However, they cannot share specific details on the case at this time. “We are diligently pursuing legal measures to address this matter.”

As soon as Eleanor was at the shelter, they immediately began treating her. The 17-year-old dog was immediately placed with one of their private rescue partners with the hopes of finding “the resilient pup” a temporary foster or an adopter to “make her comfortable in her golden years.”

It only took a few hours for the most wonderful thing to happen – Eleanor found her furever home already. “Within just an hour of sharing her story, Eleanor received multiple rescue partner holds, a foster interest, and by day’s end, Eleanor was officially adopted,” San Antonio ACS shared. “Thanks to the incredible support of our community, Eleanor’s heartwarming story resonated far and wide, and we’re thrilled to announce that she is now basking in the love of her new family!”

They continued, “On Tuesday, Ms. D came across our post; touched by her story, the D family decided to make Eleanor a member of their family. In her new home, Eleanor will be a pampered pup, surrounded by the love she truly deserves, making up for all the years she missed out on.”

The shelter staff concluded, “We are so happy for Eleanor! Thank you to the D family for opening their hearts and home to Eleanor!”

During the freezing temperatures, City of San Antonio Animal Care Services is urging pet parents to bring their animals inside. Over the course of a few days they said they have received “an overwhelming 517+ calls regarding pets in need during the freezing temperatures” and an increased number of their animal control officers are responding to calls 24 hours a day.
