We have recently created this group in response to an increase in DogHeirs members affected by Chiari Malformation and Syringomyelia. As we continue to develop our research articles and media, we invite members to join this group and contribute to our materials by submitting photos, videos and information on CM and SM and tagging your materials with the "Chiari Malformation and Syringomyelia" tag.
Chiari Malformation (CM), Caudal Occipital Malformation Syndrome (COMS), Syringomyelia (SM)
Syringomyelia (sear-IN-go-my-EEL-ya) is a disorder in which a cyst forms within the spinal cord. This cyst, called a syrinx, expands and elongates over time, destroying the center of the spinal cord. This damage results in headaches, loss of hot/cold sensitivity, pain, weakness, and stiffness in the back, shoulders, arms, or legs. In most cases, the disorder is related to a congenital abnormality of the brain called a Chiari I malformation. This malformation causes the lower part of the cerebellum to protrude from its normal location in the back of the head into the cervical or neck portion of the spinal canal.

I suggest downloading the symposiums PDF files. They have interesting information. For example, apparently 100% of Cavaliers are affected though some are asymptomatic. This seems to have been caused by breeding those dogs that did not have mitral valve heart disease. Also, these dogs have the brain the size of Labradors in a toy dog skull!
