Police officer kidnaps dog to save him from euthanasia

  • Lars Bo Lomholt is a police officer who kidnapped a dog in order to save himA policeman kidnapped and saved a dog's life

A dog scheduled for euthanasia was kidnapped and saved by a policeman in Denmark. Dog lovers are rallying behind Lars Bo Lomholt, a police officer accused of kidnapping a German Shepherd from a kennel the night before the dog was scheduled to be put down for biting another dog.

At first, police believed the theft was carried out by a man pretending to be a police officer. But now Lars, a 20 year veteran, faces criminal charges and dismissal from the the North Zealand police department.

Thor, a 7-year-old German Shepherd Dog, is owned by a woman named Jette. In September 2012 the dog and his owner Jette were out on a walk when a smaller dog jumped out behind them and scared Thor. Thor, who was on a leash, was startled and bit the dog once.

According to Jette, she and the owner of the smaller dog both apologized to each other over the incident and exchanged information. When the smaller dog was taken to the vet, the incident was reported to the police. Jette received a fine, which she paid, and she then assumed that the incident was resolved.

However, 10 weeks later, three police officers appeared at Jette's home and seized Thor. They said he had been ordered to be put to sleep because Thor had bitten the other dog and his behavior was deemed "unnatural".

Police spokesperson Thomas Kristensen told the Danish paper Elstra Bladet that they examined the facts of the case and that the vet had assessed that there were "several bite wounds and the injured dog received stitches several times".

A dog owner's dog has become the center of a political debate after a police officer kidnapped her dog in order to save him But dog lovers and advocates disagree with police and said the actions overstep their authority and disregard animal behavior. According to the Copanhagen Post, Charlotte Andersen with the animal advocacy group Fair Dog said, "We are shocked that the police can decide whether a dog is to be put down or not. They are to evaluate what the natural behaviour of a dog is. They say that it was not natural that Thor bit the dog, but it was. It is not necessarily a grievous bite if the dog exhibits natural behaviour."

For his part, Lars said he took the dog from Hillerød Pet Boarding on "moral grounds". He told Danish television media that police can clash with their own morality when peaceful family dogs can be euthanized for trivial things. The dog's whereabouts are currently unknown, but Lars said that Thor is now in "good hands".

The case is now being internally investigated by police and Lars has been charged with misconduct and fraud and is likely lose his job over his actions. He said, "I know I did something crappy. But I had simply had enough."

Thor's case and the actions of Lars is causing a furor of political debate in the country over dog laws and police authority.

If you would like to support Lars, you can sign the official petition (it's in Danish, of course! Translation via comments below (thank you!):

And I thought I disliked all police' Finally we have a police officer who is using his power for good and not evil and this is what happens. What a pathetic joke! Maybe we should have the same rule for animal abusers? I wouldn't have a problem with that. The first time is the last time for them too! This story is outrageous. Euthanize is not the answer for everything.
Agree with Lori. It is amusing whenever someone asks me if our dogs bite. Our respond, "Only when you disrespect them." Heck, I'd bite, too.
"Thor had bitten the other dog and his behavior was deemed "unnatural"." Since when did biting become an "Unatural" behavior in dogs? I seriously go slack jawed when people ask me "does your dog bite"? Well, she is a dog and she is capable of biting, so yes I guess she does bite. She probably won't, but she is a dog, THEY ARE CAPABLE OF BITING!
Lars-you are AMAZING-Thank You XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX It's IMPERATIVE to do the right thing when it's MOST important-which tends to coincide with when it's the most difficult. Hang in there and know you are not alone-you are a hero of the finest kind-a Man who risks everything for a sould who can do nothing for him. I know of no finer definition of a hero. <3 xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox><3
OMG, ha ha ha, I have no words to describe the ignorance of whoever decided Thor's behaviour was 'unnatural'. As a canine behaviourist in the making I can tell you that it is indeed EXTREMELY NATURAL for a leashed dog to bite a loose dog that jumps all over it. Size doesn't matter here because size should not be an excuse. The world is full of badly behaved small dogs that grab people by their ankles and bite and jump on other dogs. Not respecting another dog's space is not deemed normal or natural in the dog world so maybe think twice which dog behaved unnaturally.... Denmark is a nice country but quite obviously you need to sack your 'experts' in this case.
You know, its something how when a dog does something to another dog or human, he gets put to sleep but when a human does unthinkable things to a dog--torture, skinning, stabbing, shooting, burying, beating, forcing to dog-fight, starving, leaving in freezing weather, abandiment, chained, set on fire, throwing up against the wall, eating while alive, sodimizing and you think that is the end of the list--think not--I'm sure there are things I've never heard/read and all that-----that person doesn't be put to sleep, but a slap on the hand. Animals are God's children too....enough is enough. Dog's are almost like humans, however, you can't expect it to react like you want like they are suppose to be better than humans. I praise the officer to think of God's children before his own life. God Bless the officer for doing what is right even though it was a difficult decision of weighing consequences.
For those of you who do not read Danish here is the partition in English... "Sign this if you believe that Lars should NOT be punished for freeing German Sheppard, Thor!" The boxes ask in order for First name, last name, city, country, email. Shall your signature be publicly visible? Ja/ Yes (X) Nej/ No ( ) [Sign this partition] -Your email will never be visible, nor will it be shared with a third party-
Mimi it says: By = City UK = Storbritannien Skal din underskrift være offentlig? = Should your signature be public? button says = write in this petition. The petition says: Sign it, and show that you believe that Lars NOT need a penalty to rid German Shepherd Thor! (Or so Google Translate tell me.)
I very much want to sign the petition, but I would like to ask if it could somehow be translated into English for us. I just don't feel comfortable signing something when I cannot read what I am signing. I would like to trust that it says what we're told it says, but it's still not something I want to do. Thank you. (I totally support the police officer's decision.)
Dogs will be dogs! after all if someone jumped at you would you not react? Just another case of people trying to throw authority around! I commend this officer! we should have more like him! The issue was resolved! They should mind their own business and leave this beautiful animal alone!
I want to sign the petition but having trouble with the translation, I got most of it but what do they mean when they say By on the form after your last name and before county (land) could someone please help me?
Bless this good officer for having the courage to do what was right. He is a good, honest man which is what everything we want in a police officer! He should be given a medal instead of facing charges and disciplinary action!
God Bless you sir and thank you for saving the dogs life. I would have wanted to do what you did. You startle a dog and can get that reaction like a person hitting someone who startle them. Good for you. and thank you again for being a hero to this dog.
I agree with Erin - the officer did the right thing. The two dog owners exchanged information, Jette paid her fine, and that should have ended the matter. Why did these other police officers think they know so much about the psychology of the dog? They know NOTHING! Lars is a hero for saving this dog's life, and if he loses his job over this, I'm sure he will find a much better and more rewarding job afterward!
I wholeheartedly agree with what the officer did. He didn't do anything crappy. He did what was right and I don't think he should lose his job over a heroic act. For heaven's sake, the two owners apologized to each other and exchanged their information. And Jette paid her fine! I don't think any more should have been done after that.
I am sorry Thor, he was only protecting his human...right? Yeah the police over stepped they haven't even met the dog they just assume. Thank you officer for standing up for Thor. ((hugs))
We have a similar incident here in CA involving a pit ,and a horse and its rider, a police officer.
Thor was on a leash with a responsible dog owner when he was jumped by another dog. So if you're walking your dog in Denmark and you get attacked by another dog, and your dog wins the fight, they will put your dog down? There are a lot of older dogs out there that get defensive when around more energetic younger dogs that will jump on them. Sometimes they will bit to defend themselves. I think that Thor and his owner shouldn't have been charged at all and the authorities should have at least offered a muzzle order before jumping to kill the dog.
Great man!!! I am very proud of you for standing up for Thor when no one else would! You are an angel to animals.
I commend that officer for doing what he did! He said he had enough well we all have had enough on what they are doing to these animals only he did something about it ! If you lose your job over this there are better jobs out there for you and right now with all the cops shooting these animals no body thinks highly of cops anymore
