Loving mastiff takes care of baby chimpanzee

  • chimp and dog

A baby chimpanzee was rejected by his mother at a Russian Zoo two years ago. When one of the employees of the zoo took the little chimpanzee home to care for it, she had never thought her 100-pound Mastiff, who recently had four pups, would take on the role of foster mother for the orphaned chimp.

But the gentle dog, let the orphaned chimp cuddle to her and hold onto her like he would a mother.

The baby chimp holds onto the dog, much like chimps in the wild. The animals must be in constant touch their mothers to feel safe.

Like dogs, chimpanzees are social animals and are best raised in groups of their own kind.

Although nothing more appears to be published about what happened next to the baby chimp, he likely returned to the zoo soon after.

This is a very cute story. I sure hope the chimp gets to stay for awhile till it's old enough to take care of it's selft at a zoo and not hurt by others.

This so so adorable. Every picture made me smile. I wonder if the chimp is gonna have to go back to the zoo. That would be a bummer.
Well, this is just the sweetest story! I hope they follow up with a video so we can see them in action. I especially loved the pic with chimp eating right alongside all the pups. SO DARN CUTE!!!
I have 2 English mastiff /boxer mixes. My BO who is 3/4 mastiff is 2 years old and very much a caregiver. We just added Maggie May, an energetic 1/2 mastiff/ 1/2 boxer to our family and Bo took over role of daddy/big brother extremely well. It is so much fun seeing the 2 of them walk side by side. She pretty much follows him everywhere. She sleeps beside him and always has to be touching him. He has always been my shadow and loves his mommy time, crawling up in my lap all 120 pounds of him. :) Mastiffs love to be touching someone.
