English and French Bulldogs share quite a few similarities, but they both have very unique characteristics.
The English Bulldog is a breed with characteristically wide head and shoulders. There are generally thick folds of skin on a Bulldog’s brow; round, black, wide-set eyes; a short muzzle with characteristic folds called a rope or nose roll above the nose; hanging skin under the neck; drooping lips and pointed teeth, and an underbite with an upturned jaw. The coat is short, flat, and sleek, with colours of red, fawn, white, brindle, and piebald.
An English Bulldog’s disposition should be “equable and kind, resolute, and courageous (not vicious or aggressive), and demeanor should be pacific and dignified. These attributes should be countenanced by the expression and behavior”. Most have a friendly, patient, but stubborn nature. Bulldogs are recognized as excellent family pets because of their tendency to form strong bonds with children. Generally, Bulldogs are known for getting along well with children, other dogs, and other pets.
On the other hand, French Bulldogs were the result in the 1800s of a cross between bulldog ancestors imported from England and local ratters in Paris. Accordingly, they are smaller than English Bulldogs and have the appearance of an active, muscular dog, of heavy bone, smooth coat, compactly built, and of medium or small structure.
Frenchies are companion dogs and require close contact with humans. They are sometimes called “Frog dogs” or “Clown dogs”. Frog dog is in reference to their wide round face and the unique way they sit with hind legs spread out. Clown dog is because they are known to be fun loving vivacious “clowns of the dog world”. Their calm nature makes them an excellent choice for apartment dwellers, as does their sensible attitude towards barking.
Frenchies are patient and affectionate with their humans, especially with children, who are especially protected by the females.
