Boy's turkey call saves lost elderly dog

  • A boy helped find an elderly lost dog thanks to his turkey call

An 11-year-old boy is responsible for finding an elderly lost dog thanks to his skills at calling for turkey.

A boy helped find an elderly lost dog thanks to his turkey callAustin Gibson was sitting on a snow bank practicing his turkey call when he saw a brown shape burrowed in the snow. "I was sitting on a snow bank practicing my turkey call when I saw something brown and I called my dad," said Austin. "She was just standing there wagging her tail and looking at us."

Austin took off his jacket and put it around the cold and shivering dog. The dog with poor eyesight and bad hearing turned out to be a 17-year-old Labrador Retriever Springer mix who had gone missing 5 days earlier. The dog named Maggie had gotten lost the day after Christmas, during a snowstorm in Dundee, New York.

Her owner searched for her during the snowstorm but whiteout conditions made it very difficult to find her. The owner looked for two days and a local radio show broadcast an alert about Maggie but still no one found her.

Then nearly a week later Austin's turkey call caught Maggie's attention, something her owner is calling a miracle. Austin said he loves dogs himself and was happy to help get Maggie home.

That is a great turkey call, Austin!! I can't even imagine how Maggie was able to stand up after being missing for 5 days in the snow! The fact that she heard your call, and she can't hear her family call for her, says that you definitely have the right pitch that she could hear. It is said that dogs hear a high-pitched sound much better and your call is wonderful! Thanks for being out there at the right time and the right place, and for saving her life. It is so refreshing to read this story after reading all the bad things that are being done to animals. Thank you and I wish that all people were like you. :)
You're a good guy Austin! Thanks for doing the right thing. Maggie wouldn't have lasted much longer at her age. I'm sure her owners are really thankful to get her back. On another note tho, what the? happened to the refrigerator? :0(
Way to go Austin ! You have the most unique turkey call in the world. One that saved a life.
