Diet for DM

  • My beautiful Kira was just diagnosed with myelopathy -- I've researched the web and started to devise a home made diet coupled with supplements and vitamins to hopefully give her some more time and quality of life. Looking for any experience with this -- most articles suggest vitamins B, C, E, as well as flax seed, tumeric, grape seed all as anti-inflammatories. Thanks in advance.

Hi Vicki, I don't know much about Degenerative Myelopathy in dogs, but beta-carotene (found in carrots) and salmon oil and blueberries are helpful anti-oxidants, and I'd imagine healthy for dogs with the condition. I'd ask a vet about grape seed oil though, as grapes are very bad for dogs, but I really don't know about the rest of the plant and its effects on dogs. I'd also consider avoiding garlic as well (even if recommended), as dogs can react very badly to it (as they do with onions). DogHeirs has an article on foods to avoid in their Articles section.
