Update: February 23, 2012. A cane corso mix was euthanized in West Palm Beach after attacking four people - including a 3-year-old girl and a firefighter. The dog bit a 13-year old girl, the girl's grandmother, the 3-year-old and a fire rescue crew member that was called to the home.
Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control says brain tissue samples from the cane corso mix will be tested for rabies. The dog was not current on rabies vaccinations. Although unconfirmed at this point, it is another caution for pet owners in the area to be sure their dog is current on their rabies vaccinations!
A rabies alert has been issued for central Palm Beach County after a puppy tested positive for the disease on Feb. 17.
The Palm Beach County Health Department said the alert will be in effect for 60 days and will mainly be for the area where the puppy was located, near the Florida Turnpike and Okeechobee Boulevard. The boundaries extend north to Northlake Boulevard, south to Southern Boulevard, east to Interstate 95 and west to Royal Palm Beach Boulevard.
Pet owners are advised to keep rabies vaccinations up-to-date, and to keep pets under supervision so that they do not come into contact with wild animals such as coyotes, skunks, bats, rats, feral cats etc.
All county residents to be alert for animals exhibiting signs of sickness and aggressive behavior. Animals exhibiting signs of sickness or aggressive behavior should be reported to Animal Care and Control at (561) 233-1200.
