A man came to the rescue of a badly injured dog on a Houston highway after he heard about her on the radio.

A female dog was spotted in an outbound HOV lane on the Eastex Freeway early Friday. She was lying in the middle of the road. Rickey Young heard it announced on the radio and decided to do something to help.

He told KHOU News, "I’m just kind of a softie on that kind of stuff," he said.  "I have a dog, and I’d hate to see him on the highway like that."

The father and construction worker drove to the spot and climbed into the HOV lane of the highway from an underpass and tried to coax the yellow Labrador Retriever mix over to him. She was too afraid at first and wouldn't come to him. So he grabbed his sandwich, and managed to lure her over. He got a hold of her and put her in his truck.

"I could see that she was thankful and she was happy to be in a safer environment," he said.

He rushed her to the Houston SPCA, who said that Rickey brought her to them just in time. Their vet said the stray dog had life-threatening internal bleeding and broken bones and likely would have died if she had not been rescued.

But thanks to Rickey, the dog has a second chance.

Mr. Young might be a dog hero, but as far as a contractor, not so much. I'm not the first complaint, but perhaps the most linked in, and so I report that Mr. Young entered into contract with me for $20,000 for multiple items to complete a home renovation that was up until I got an equity loan, happening in small increments. I paid him 25% down on 12/30 and work was to begin 1/5. He cashed the check and I heard no more from him. He doesn't call, respond to calls, email, respond to emails, text or respond to texts. He is done. I've reported him. I am a single mom who is seeking a better answer from this Good Samaritan than the apparent victimization.
Just so everyone knows we do have Earth Angels and Rickey Young is one of them. Rickey, Saint Francis of Assisi patron saint of animals will always be watching over you. Rickey you are a brave, great man and hero. I hope others well learn from your wonderful heart and good deed. Have a grand and wonderful day !
What a wonderful thing you did. I cannot fathom why not one other person would stop. My God I cannot imagine driving past that and doing nothing. I hope al goes well for the pup. Great job Rickey !! Are you adopting the pup ??
I agree with Darrin, Well done Rickey. Does my heart good to see someone save an animal.
Well done Rickey Young. You saved this dog from a horrible death. I'm so glad that you got the dog to a vet in time. I hope that the surgery went well and that this dog finds a loving home. I also hope that the authorities check those traffic cameras to see how this dog got there in the first place. Just to make sure that it wasn't a criminal act. Well done Rickey.
